On 16 February the EU Parliament adopted a resolution on a new directive proposal regarding the prevention of the entry into the legal supply chain of medicinal products which are couterfeit with reference to their identity, history or source.

According to the Directive proposal, in three years pharmaceutical companies shall stamp each packaging of a medicinal product with a serial number which can be traked from the manufacturing plant to the pharmacy.

Mail-order pharmacies - in the EU member states where they are allowed - shall have an EU logo on their websites. The chief pharmacist shall be identified on the websites and the doctor's original prescription must be obtained before mailing out the medicine. This is aimed at reducing the risk of confusion between authorised legal on-line pharmacies and the offer of illegal products over the web.
