According to recent press releases, it seems that the new Italian Ministry of Economic Development is going to "freeze" the so called beauty contest procedure aimed at granting new tv digital frequencies to broadcasting operators on a free basis.

Apparently, the decision of the Italian Ministry should be made official during the meeting of the Board of Ministries of January 20th, 2012 and follows the criticisms raised by the public opinion during the past months. Indeed, according to some commentators, the beauty contest procedure is not the right way valorize the public assets and to move past a moment of deep economic crisis.

Currently, there are no elements to say what is going to be and whether or not the beauty contest will be replaced by a public tender. Before revoking the beauty contest, the Ministry said, it will be necessary to carry out an analysis of the impact that a public tender would trigger.

We will keep you posted. If you want to discuss the above, feel free to contact me Matia Campo (matia.campo@dlapiper.com).
